Carthage Drops Opener at No. 4 Wisconsin-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. — Beginning the 2021 season with one of the nation's toughest games on the road, the Carthage football team fell 46-7 to No. 4 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday at Perkins Stadium.

The home team took an early lead, going on top of the Firebirds (0-1) 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. In the second period, the Warhawks (1-0) added 27 more points to take a 41-0 lead into the halftime break. To start the second half, the Carthage defense forced a fumble on each of Whitewater's first two drives, before Jake Tomczak intercepted a pass in the end zone to make it three-consecutive defensive turnovers for the Firebirds.

Midway through the final period, Tomczak picked off his second pass of the day, setting Carthage up with the ball on their own 38 yard line. With Mitch Mahler checking in at quarterback, the Firebird offense drove down the field and scored with moments left in the game, setting the final score at 46-7 as Carthage fell to the fourth-ranked team in the country.

Head Coach Dustin Hass

"We got beat today by a very good football team. Our kids never quit, but we have a long way to go. We need to come out, have a great bye week, and prepare for a very tough CCIW schedule."
