Firebirds Open CCIW Play with 34-17 Road Win Over Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. — Coming off a bye week, the Carthage football team began conference play with a strong 34-17 victory over Elmhurst on the road on Saturday at Langhorst Field.

On their third drive of the day the Firebirds (1-1, 1-0 CCIW) drove down the field, with the freshman connection of Cristian Beltran to Sylvere Campbell on a back-corner fade putting Carthage on the board for a touchdown. After the defense held Elmhurst (0-2, 0-1 CCIW) to a field goal, Noel Wright II led the offense down the field, punching it in for a 10-yard score after a 51-yard rush on the drive, putting the Firebirds up by 10, 13-3 midway through the second quarter.

Early in the second half, the Bluejays made it a three-point game with a touchdown, before Bryce Lowe came in at quarterback and found Eddie Ell III over the middle in the end zone to make it 20-10. In the final moments of the third quarter, Elmhrust would score on a deep pass to get within three, 20-17. However, the Firebirds responded, as Lowe ran it in to give the visitors another 10-point advantage, with Lowe scoring again through the air as he found Ell III for his second receiving touchdown of the day. Carthage would close it out with a 34-17 victory.

Head Coach Dustin Hass

"We started a bit slower than we wanted to and put the team in a tough spot to start, but they responded. The offense took off in the second half, they responded well. Bryce (Lowe) played really well in the second half; Cristian didn't do anything wrong but it was just time to switch things up, and Bryce came in and he played really well."

"Noel (Wright II) is a young kid for us and a good player. He has some sudden explosiveness to him and the offensive line did an amazing job of opening up holes all day long."

Wide Receiver Eddie Ell III

"We wanted to run the ball a lot to support the defense, but once we got some opportunities, our coaches opened it up to take some shots, and we executed well. When we were in the red zone, we knew that Elmhurst likes to run a lot of press, so we ran a concept slot bubble and I was open for the touchdown. But we were running the ball well today and our offensive line played really well, it was a great improvement from our opener."
