Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 5 Firebirds Breeze Through First Day of Lake Forest Tournament

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The No. 5 Carthage women's volleyball team wrapped up day one of the Lake Forest Tournament defeating Benedictine (Ill.) in game one 3-0 before sweeping Marian (Wis.) 3-0 in game two on Friday.

During game one, Carthage (3-0) started with a 9-8 margin sparked by a kill from Nicole Acton. Though Benedictine (Ill.) (0-1) got within one close a kill of their own, the Firebirds closed out the set on an 11-6 run capped off by a kill from Haley Horner to take set one 25-19.

After Carthage took set two 25-13, the Firebirds continued the momentum in the third with a three-point lead early on. The Eagles got within four with a service error until Carthage retaliated with another 11-5 run claiming the straight-set victory with back-to-back kills from Molly Skoda and Kasey Pfister 25-15.

In the second match of the evening, Carthage controlled a 7-3 margin with an ace from Aubree Bucheger. Marian (Wis.) (0-1) retaliated, getting within one at 8-7. The Firebirds again responded with a 17-7 run and took set one 25-14.

Set two saw both teams battle back-and-forth as the Sabres held a slim three-point advantage off an attack error. Marian (Wis.) extended the lead to nine at 19-13 until the Firebirds rallied with a 12-4 run as a final strike from Skoda gave Carthage a two-set lead 25-23.

It was all Carthage in the third as the Firebirds went out in front 15-4. Carthage ended the set on an 8-0 run sparked by three consecutive aces from Jenna Millen taking the straight-set victory 25-10.

Carthage returns to the court Saturday, September 4 for day two of the tournament as they face Loras at noon and tournament host Lake Forest at 2 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"Good start to the tournament. Haley Horner was a calming presence and did a nice job serving and on offense. Our middles Nicole Acton and Leena Ajibola had a strong night at the net. Jenna Millen had some timely service runs. Tomorrow's matches will push us so we will need to clean up some things."
