Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Second Day of Lake Forest Tournament

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — On the second day of the Lake Forest Tournament, the No. 5 Carthage women's volleyball team started with a 3-1 win over Loras before concluding with a 3-0 victory over Lake Forest.

After Loras (3-1) started with a 5-0 margin to begin the first, Carthage (5-0) responded by taking an 8-7 lead with a kill from Haley Horner. The Duhawks regained control of the set until three consecutive kills from Horner, Nicole Acton, and Molly Skoda flipped the score to 18-15. Though Loras got within three, Carthage finished with four unanswered points winning set one 25-18.

It was a back-and-forth affair to start the second as the score was even at 10. An ace from Megan Dawrant gave the Firebirds a four-point lead until Loras battled back, tying it at 23, and collected the final two points to win the set 25-23.

Carthage retaliated in the third with a quick 14-8 advantage with back-to-back kills from Horner and Liv Carel. Later in the set, the Firebirds put together four straight points extending the lead to seven as Carthage won 25-16.

After the fourth was knotted at six, the Firebirds strung together a 17-3 run extending the margin to 23-9. A final kill from Horner and a Duhawks service error gave Carthage the 3-1 victory 25-12.

The visitors jumped out to a 7-2 margin in game two with an ace from Aubree Bucheger, however Lake Forest (3-1) drew even at seven. An 11-2 run for the Firebirds extended the advantage to 18-9 with back-to-back aces from Molly Skoda. Carthage ended with back-to-back kills from Horner and Leena Ajibola for a one-set lead.

With the score locked at nine in the second, the Firebirds used another 11-4 run flipping the score to 20-13. Following a Foresters attack error, Carthage took the set with two kills from Carel 25-19.

It was all Firebirds in the final set of the day as a kill from Ajibola made it 13-8 before Carthage ended the match with an 11-6 run for the straight-set victory 25-14.

Up next, the volleyball team returns home as they host the Carthage College Invitational beginning on Friday, September 10. The first match will be Bethel against Wisconsin-Platteville at 4 p.m. before the Firebirds take on MSOE at 6 p.m. and Bethel at 8 p.m. inside Tarble Arena.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"Faced two solid opponents today and did some really good things! I thought our setters did a nice job spreading out the offense. Haley Horner was a force on offense and Molly Skoda was terrific all the way around. Aubree Bucheger and Megan Dawrant did a great job passing and on defense! Liv Carel broke out today and was a force. Our middles did a nice job at the net. Our team is starting to come together and we need to keep growing!"
