An ace from Nicole Acton and an attack error cut the lead to two 23-21; then Kasey Pfister hit a strike narrowing the gap to one, but Aurora won the set 25-22.

The Firebirds went up 7-6 in the second with a Spartans attack error. After Aurora went ahead 11-10, the visitors tied it at 18 with back-to-back kills from Horner and Carel. Carthage used the momentum and closed the set with a 6-3 with back-to-back kills from Horner, followed by a block from Horner and Pfister 25-21.

The Spartans started with a 12-7 lead in the third as the home team extended the margin to seven. Though Horner fired back-to-back kills at 17-12, Aurora took a two-set lead with an 8-3 run 25-15.

With momentum on their side, Aurora began with a 10-5 margin early. Carthage fought back, making it 24-18 with three consecutive kills, two from Horner and one from Skoda, but the home team won the match with an attack error.

Next up, Carthage returns to conference play facing Carroll (Wis.) on Saturday, October 2 at 6 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"This match had the feel of a playoff game. Haley Horner was almost unstoppable!! Aurora is an aggressive serving and hitting team. We did a much better job tonight in serve receive. The crowd was really loud and there were so many great defensive plays on both sides. So proud of this team's efforts tonight!"
