Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Firebirds Down Pioneers in Five Sets

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Carthage College women's volleyball team picked up a 3-2 victory over Carroll (Wis.) in the Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) competition Saturday night at Van Male Fieldhouse.

Carthage (12-9, 2-1 CCIW) began with a quick 10-1 lead to start the match. The Firebirds later collected five straight points moving the score to 17-7 sparked by three consecutive aces from Haley Horner. Kasey Pfister added a kill putting the visitors up seven as Carthage won the set with three Pioneers attack errors 25-19.

It was a back-and-forth effort in the second as the score was locked at nine until an 11-3 run for the Firebirds put them in front 20-12 with a kill from Nicole Acton. Though Carroll (Wis.) (4-13, 0-3 CCIW) got it to three, a bad set and a kill from Horner gave the visitors a two-set lead 25-21.

An 8-3 run to start the third for Carthage put them up early until the Pioneers tied it at 12 then took a two-point lead 14-12. After the scoreboard was knotted at 16, the home team controlled a three-point advantage off a bad set. The Firebirds rallied with a kill from Molly Skoda, shrinking the lead to 23-22; however, Carroll (Wis.) won the set 25-23.

With momentum on their side, the Pioneers went up 11-3 in the fourth. Liv Carel added a kill getting Carthage within eight but Carroll (Wis.) forced a fifth 25-16.

The Firebirds responded in the fifth, winning it 15-2 for the 3-2 match win.

Carthage returns home facing Elmhurst on Wednesday, October 6 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"That was way more exciting than I hoped it would be. We were up 2-0 and lost our energy and they picked theirs up to get the next two sets. Jenna Millen went on a great service run in set five and our block and defense picked up. We got some big kills from Haley Horner and Nicole Acton to spark the offense. Now back to work to get ready for a tough Elmhurst team."
