Carthage Women’s Soccer Beats Millikin in CCIW Opener

DECATUR, Ill. — The Carthage College women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over Millikin to start the Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play on Saturday morning at Frank M. Lindsay Field.

Millikin (4-4, 0-1 CCIW) broke the scoreless tie early in the first with a free kick at the top of the box. After the Big Blue held the lead going into halftime, Malaika Bigirindavyi scored her first goal of the season with a shot 20 yards out. 12 minutes later, Morgan Verbeten put Carthage (3-5, 1-0 CCIW) ahead 2-1 as the Firebird defense only allowed one shot to win the game.

Next up, the Firebirds face Wisconsin-Stevens Point on the road on Wednesday, September 29 starting at 4 p.m.

Head Coach Ian Wilson

"It's always great to open up conference play with a win. Today's performance capped off a great week. Our rhythm and dynamic movements today were very key to our success. We were very patient and our ball speed never let them get settled. As a team, we are starting to find confidence which is leading to our success."
