Women’s Volleyball Drops Opening Match of Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament

WHITEWATER, Wis. — In their second meeting against No. 8 Wisconsin-Whitewater, the No. 24 Carthage College women's volleyball team opened up the Whitewater Tournament with a 3-0 loss Friday night at Kris Russell Volleyball Arena.

Carthage (10-6) began the first up 9-6 until the Warhawks (9-1) tied it at nine. The Firebirds went up six with a kill from Nicole Acton until Wisconsin-Whitewater battled back, tying it at 20. Though the visitors tied it at 22 with a Warhawks attack error, Wisconsin-Whitewater took the set 25-23.

The Firebirds jumped out to a 6-4 lead in the second, but the home team retaliated with a 17-6 run, taking control of the set 21-12 and took a two-set lead 25-17.

It was a back-and-forth third as the score was locked at 12 early on. Later, a block from Leena Ajibola got the Firebirds within one 16-15. Carthage made a late push getting within two until a service error gave the home team the 3-0 victory 25-22.

Carthage will now play Concordia (Wis.) in the noon slot of the Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament on Saturday, September 25, then finish with St. Mary's (Minn.) at 2:30 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"I thought we came out with some great energy against a very good opponent! It was back and forth and they got the last push. In the second set, we got behind early and never recovered. We were very competitive in the third set and had a run at the end to close the gap. Liv Carel, Haley Horner, and Molly Skoda had some strong passing and play at the net. We will learn from this match and keep working to get better."

  • Molly Skoda finished the game with a double-double leading the Firebirds in kills (11) and digs (13).
