Firebirds Drop Game One Before Winning Game Two of Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament

WHITEWATER, Wis. — The No. 24 Carthage College women's volleyball squad split the final day of the Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament falling in game one 3-1 to Concordia (Wis.) before picking up the straight-set sweep over St. Mary's (Minn.) 3-0 on Saturday at Kris Russell Volleyball Arena.

After Concordia (Wis.) (7-3) took set one 25-10, Carthage (11-7) retaliated in the second, going up 11-6 with an ace from Aubree Bucheger, however, the Falcons put together a 9-2 run taking control of the set 15-13. Both teams traded point for point until four unanswered points for the Firebirds put them ahead 22-18 with back-to-back kills from Nicole Acton. The Falcons made one last push getting within two but two Falcons attack errors saw the game even at one 25-21.

In the third, an attack error and bad set for Concordia (Wis.) gave Carthage an 11-6 advantage. After the Falcons regained control of the set with a kill, the Firebirds took the lead with a kill from Kaitie Rohe 21-20. Concordia (Wis.) used a quick 5-1 run to win the set 25-22.

Three-straight kills for Carthage, two by Molly Skoda and one from Acton, cut the Falcons lead to one early in the fourth but a 12-3 run for Concordia (Wis.) made it 21-11 as the Falcons won the game 25-16.

Back-to-back kills from Rohe and Skoda in game two put Carthage ahead 11-7 in set one. St. Mary's (Minn.) (5-12) kept close with the Firebirds getting within three until two kills from Liv Carel and Rohe made it 17-13. The Cardinals got within two off an attack error late in the set but kills from Haley Horner and Carel gave Carthage the set 25-21.

An ace from Skoda in the second extended the Carthage lead to 11-6 early on. Later, an attack error for St. Mary's (Minn.) pushed the Firebird advantage to 18-13. The Cardinals again made a push scoring four unanswered points but Rohe connected on a kill for the set victory 25-21.

It was a back-and-forth third until the Cardinals jumped out in front with a kill 10-8. Carthage retaliated with a 9-2 run sparked by two consecutive kills from Acton and Horner as the Firebirds closed out the set with five straight points winning 25-19.

Carthage stays on the road in a rematch with Concordia (Wis.) on Tuesday, September 28 starting at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"Got one of two today. Started very slowly against an experienced Concordia team. They serve tough and we struggled to get our offense going. We came out strong in set two and win the serve pass game. We are still looking for consistency. It was good to rebound with a three-set win against St. Mary's. Tough week of competition ahead. Short practice week and then on the road."
