Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Carthage Offense Breaks Through for 1-0 Victory

KENOSHA, Wis. — Outshooting their opponent 12-1 in the first half and 19-6 for the match, the No. 16 Carthage men's soccer team was able to find the back of the net to push their win streak to four games, defeating Lake Forest College on Wednesday afternoon at Mohr Field.

Much of the first half was dictated by the Firebirds (6-1-1) offense, as they were able to pull off five shots, four on goal, within the first 25 minutes of play. However, in the 26th minute, Mickey Reilly assisted Mason McCaw on his second goal of the season. Adding two saves in the second half, Christian Lekki and the Carthage defense kept the Foresters (0-8-1) out of goal for the remainder of the match.

Up next for the Firebirds is their inaugural conference game this season, as they travel to Millikin on Saturday, September 25 for a 1:30 p.m. match

Head Coach Steve Domin

"Challenging weather today for the Firebirds, particularly the wind. Summer feels like it's over and teams are going to have to start playing a little different style. I loved the way we played for about half of the minutes in the game today, and really disliked the other 45 minutes. Teammates were bailing each other out all over the place, and we still need to work on some things."

"The match felt like if we got one more, we would have gotten three or four on top of it. But credit to their keeper, and Lake Forest's hustle. Both teams had a handful of injuries and played folks out of position, and it really became a game of managing the big mistake. Also, I think the guys wanted more from themselves today, which I am proud of. We have had a couple trap-type games here back-to-back, so we are ready to reclaim some real focus."

Quick Facts

  • Christian Lekki posted his fifth shutout of the season today. The junior keeper and the Carthage backs owned a 71.4 shutout percentage entering today's match, which ranked 13th in the country.
  • Posting his fifth assist of the season, Mickey Reilly now leads the CCIW, and owns a team-best 11 total points, tied for fourth in the conference.
