Firebirds Draw in Road Contest at Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. — After each team traded a pair of late goals, neither was able to score in double overtime, resulting in a 1-1 draw between the Carthage men's soccer team and Millikin at Frank M. Lindsay Field on Saturday.

The forwards for the Firebirds (6-1-2, 0-0-1 CCIW) were aggressive through the first half, posting nine shots, while the defense held the Big Blue (0-6-2, 0-0-1 CCIW) to none. It wasn't until the 80th minute of play that Carthage broke through, as Noah Smeja collected a loose ball and scored from five yards out to make it 1-0. However, Millikin would tie the game with a goal in the remaining seconds of play. Neither team scored in the two overtime periods, resulting in Carthage's second draw of the season.

The Firebirds will continue CCIW play next week as they travel to Chicago to face North Park on Wednesday, September 29 for a 7:30 p.m. game.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"Well, today wasn't exactly the birthday gift I was expecting. We have a great group of guys who really push hard, and with the slippery nature of soccer it can get frustrating. Looking at the stats, you may guess we won outright, owning every part of the stats sheet but the main one. We are young and a touch vulnerable to not playing plays or games all the way through, but we sure make it exciting. I'm looking forward to getting back on the pitch."

Quick Facts

  • Carthage outshot Millikin 31-6 today, and held the Big Blue to no shots in both the first half of regulation, and second overtime period.
  • Noah Smeja scored his third goal of the season today, after collecting a pair of scores against St. Norbert College.
  • Silvio Gkizas posted career-highs in shots with six, and shots on goal with four.
