Carthage Takes Down Illinois Wesleyan in Home Opener with 62-35 Rout

KENOSHA, Wis. — For the second-straight week, the Carthage football team came out victorious against a conference opponent, defeating Illinois Wesleyan 62-35 on Saturday afternoon at Art Keller Field.

After the defense forced a three-and-out, the Firebirds (2-1, 2-0 CCIW) began their first drive on their own 25-yard line. Highlighted by a pair of long pass plays from Bryce Lowe to Sylvere Campbell and Alex Jarvis, Carthage marched down the field before Travis Boston Jr. punched it across the goal line to give the home team the lead.

In the second quarter, the Firebirds put up 27 points, beginning with a 20-yard pass from Lowe to Eddie Ell III to make it 14-0. While the Titans (0-3, 0-2 CCIW) responded midway through the quarter to make it a one-score game, Carthage quickly retaliated with a 60-yard passing touchdown, before connecting for a 42-yard passing touchdown on their next possession to set the score at 27-7. Scoring once more before the second-quarter horn, the Firebirds would lead 34-7 at halftime.

On their second offensive drive of the half, Lowe connected for yet another long touchdown, this time going 35 yards to Clayton Markech to make it 41-7. Later in the quarter, Illinois Wesleyan began to drive down the field, before Jalen Dennis pressured the quarterback into throwing up an interception for Keith Freeman, who took it 76 yards for the score. While the Titans would score once more at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Alex Jarvis responded immediately with a 95-yard kickoff return for a score, making it 48-14 in favor of the Firebirds.

The visitors would find the endzone three more times, and Carthage twice, to set the scoreboard at 62-35 as the final whistle blew.

The Firebirds will hit the road next week, traveling to Decatur, Ill. to take on Millikin on Saturday, October 2 at 1 p.m.

Head Coach Dustin Hass

"We played well right from the jump, and had a little extra motivation. Bryce continued right where he left off from last week against Elmhurst and kept it rolling, he did a great job for us. The fake-punt call was a little bit of a gutsy call because we didn't see what they had done on their punt-return team, but from our film we figured they were going to bring everybody, and we went through with it. Zach did a great job sliding out and David made a great pass, and it was obviously a huge play for us."

"We had a lot of things go right today and went deep into our bench to get some guys playing time which they really needed. It was good for our guys to go against some starters since Illinois Wesleyan had theirs out there throughout the game. I thought our defensive starters played really well, and they earned the ability to get off the field."

Quarterback Bryce Lowe

"Since the beginning, I've known I can trust my receivers. I know that if I get them the ball, they're going to make a play. Just those little out-routes that we were throwing to Sylvere, they make the most of them and turn a five-yard throw into at least 10-12 yards every time, just because they're playmakers."
