KENOSHA, Wis. — To begin the Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play, the No. 15 Carthage College women's volleyball team fell to No. 17 Millikin 3-1 on Wednesday at Tarble Arena.

In the first set, back-to-back attack errors for Millikin (6-1, 1-0 CCIW) put Carthage (6-4, 0-1 CCIW) in front 8-6. The Big Blue got within one with an ace and tied it at 12 with a kill. After the score was tied at 17, Carthage went up two with a block from Nicole Acton and Haley Horner and a kill from Molly Skoda. With the score locked at 23, a block for the visitors and a Carthage attack error gave Millikin the first set 25-23.

The Firebirds rebounded in the second, controlling a 13-7 advantage with a kill from Horner and an ace from Megan Dawrant. The visitors retaliated, rattling off four straight points until back-to-back kills from Skoda and Carel made it 21-14. A 4-1 run capped by an ace from Acton tied the match at one set apiece 25-15.

Millikin controlled an 8-4 margin in the third then used an 11-5 run to extend the lead to 19-9 as The Big Blue took the third 25-14.

The visitors continued the pressure in the fourth going up 7-2 to start. Skoda added another ace that got the home team within three at 16-13 forcing a Millikin timeout. Kaitie Rohe got in the scoring column with a kill, getting Carthage within two, however, the Big Blue responded with a 7-2 run to win the match 25-18.

Carthage hits the road for the Loras Tournament which begins on Friday, September 17 as the Firebirds take on St. Olaf at 5 p.m. and Grinnell at 7:30 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"We started out with some good energy and did a lot of good things, we just let up in the end. We're just trying to find ourselves. We played well in the second set. Kaitie Rohe was great tonight, and Liv Carel did a lot of good for us. The girls made a valiant effort in set four and a few girls came off the bench, we almost pulled it off. There is plenty of talent out there but we're just trying to figure out the right combination and get our confidence back. We have to work our way out of it and we will figure this out. "
