Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Firebirds Take Down No. 3 Calvin on the Road

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — In a defensive stalemate, the Carthage men's soccer team were the ones to break through with a goal, as they defeated No. 3 Calvin 1-0 on Saturday evening at Zuidema Field.

Early in the match, the Firebirds (3-1-1) saw an opportunity to take a lead as they drew a penalty in the box in the ninth minute of action. However, the Knights' (3-1-2) keeper made the save, setting a precedent for the first half that would keep 10 Carthage shots from finding the back of the net.

In the 66th minute of play, Mason McCaw took a ball down the field before sending it over to Mickey Reilly, who gave it right back to McCaw for the score to break the stalemate and put the Firebirds up 1-0. Calvin pressed in the remaining minutes of the match, nearly scoring before an offsides call in the 70th minute, and almost converting in the 78th before a great defensive play by Colin Iverson.

Carthage would keep the Knights from scoring to secure their third win of the season.

The Firebirds return home next, as they host Lawrence University on Wednesday, September 15 at 7 p.m. at Art Keller Field.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"Surely it was two really high-end teams battling out there, and for a fan I am sure it was a great game to watch. If I separated myself from the events of yesterday, just not playing well and giving a result away 24 hours ago, I would have said we had a big challenge ahead of us today. Playing these teams, top five in America, on the road, at schools that put much energy into their teams, I think someone outside our shell would say we were done."

"I couldn't be more pleased with a energy to compete in the second day of a tournament like this, adjust behaviors from yesterday, and really take the game to an opponent of a higher caliber. I would have to dig deeper into the math and watch the film with precision, but we owned many parts of the match. Silvio converts on his PK, Moran locks his ankle on a setter, and Joe Balas taps one in at the end, we may win this thing three or four to one."

"Credit to Calvin, and Hope, tremendous sides and everyone gets up to play them. I was proud our guys just handled their business and did their jobs in a workman-like manner. No dramatic fireworks, they believe. Their goalkeeper and center backs kept this interesting. For our side, we wouldn't trade out Lekki, Iverson, Moran, Jhovanny, Omar and Renfro in our back third for anyone in America."

"Super happy for Mason and Reilly connecting on their goal, because as many times we were buzzing the tower and not yielding it was starting to feel like one goal would be the decider. We have some injuries headed into these games, and hope we get a few more back next week."
