The Firebirds (1-0) began with a fast 11-5 lead sparked by two aces from Haley Horner and a kill from Molly Skoda. Later, an ace from Liv Carel propelled the margin to 17-9 before Carthage took the first set 25-15 with a strike from Carel.

In the second, Lakeland (0-1) jumped out in front with a 9-2 advantage until the Firebirds battled back tying the set at 11 off a Muskies attack error. Both teams battled back-and-forth as the score was even at 22 until a Muskies attack error and back-to-back Firebirds blocks gave Carthage a two-set lead 25-22.

The Firebirds continued momentum in the third as a block from Leena Ajibola and Horner made it 13-10. Lakeland kept close with Carthage getting within four however, the Firebirds closed out the set with a 6-2 run to win 25-16.

Carthage will hit the road for their first road tournament of the season playing Benedictine (Ill.) and Marian (Wis.) on Friday, September 4 starting at 4 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"It's great to get the first one under our belt! Haley Horner was big tonight at the net and on the service line. Liv Carel played very well tonight to start her career and Molly Skoda was solid as well. Megan Dawrant came up with a service run for us in set two that got us going. Jenna Millen did a nice job getting the ball to our hitters. Aubrey Bucheger had a good night defensively. We got some timely blocks from Nicole Acton and Leena Ajibola. Now we go on the road to Lake Forest for a tournament."
