Firebirds Drop One Before Winning Final Game of Regular Season at Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. — After losing the first game of a doubleheader 4-2, the Carthage baseball team closed out their regular season with an 11-5 victory over Wheaton on Saturday at Lee Pfund Stadium.

While the home team struck first in game one with a run in the first inning, the Firebirds (16-24, 11-21 CCIW) responded in the top of the second after Ben Levicki hit a leadoff double and came around to score. The Thunder (15-25, 11-21 CCIW) would retake the lead in the following inning 2-1, before Levicki tied it once more, this time with a home run over the left field fence in the top of the fourth. However, the home team scored two in the bottom of the frame, taking a 4-2 lead they would hold the remainder of the game.

In game two, Wheaton took the lead early yet again before Carthage scored two on a pair of RBI singles from Drew Dyer and Cody Tostrud to make it 4-2. After the Thunder scored a run in the bottom of the second, the Firebirds got the run back to make it 5-3, later taking the lead in the top of the fifth 6-5. The Firebirds extended their lead in the next frame, as Brandon Mahoney hit a two-run single up the middle before coming around to score. A single through the left side by P.T. Boeye would bring Pierson Gibis across the plate to give Carthage a 10-5 advantage. The Firebirds would score one more in the seventh to go on to win the final game on their regular season schedule by six.

Up next for the Firebirds is the CCIW Tournament, where they'll open with another matchup against Wheaton on Monday, May 17 at 3 p.m. at Lee Pfund Stadium.
