WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Carthage women's lacrosse team fell in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) opener to Carroll (Wis.) 17-16 on Saturday at Schneider Stadium.
Though Carroll (Wis.) (7-1, 2-0 CCIW) got on the board first, Carthage (3-4, 0-1 CCIW) responded with a goal from Maddie Berni. The Pioneers added five goals to regain the lead 6-1. Hanna Holloway found the back of the net shrinking the deficit to 6-2. Both teams traded goals making it 7-3 with 12:45 left in the half. Margaux Giacotto tallied her second goal of the game at the 11:58 mark cutting the Carroll (Wis.) lead to three. The home team scored a lone goal making it 8-4 until a third goal from Giacotto narrowed the margin to three with 8:29 remaining. The Firebirds got within two with a goal from
Jessie Gibson until the Pioneers put in two goals. A goal from Gibson just before the end of the half made the score 10-7 heading into the break.
The Firebirds put in two goals in the second, however, Carroll (Wis.) added four making the score 14-9 with 18:12. The Pioneers extended the lead to 16-9 until three goals from Gibson, Berni, and Halloway cut the advantage to 17-12. Another goal from Gibson saw the Carroll (Wis.) lead move to four. Though the Firebirds tallied a pair of goals getting within one late and had two shots on goal in the last ten seconds, the Pioneers won the game 17-16.
Carthage continues CCIW play on Wednesday, April 7 playing Illinois Wesleyan at home starting at 6:30 p.m.
