Firebirds Win CCIW Conference Tournament

KENOSHA, Wis. — In the finals of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) tournament, the No. 1 Carthage College men's volleyball team collected another straight-set conference victory 3-0 over No. 3 Augustana (Ill.) to win the CCIW Conference Tournament on Saturday at Tarble Arena. 

Carthage (20-0) began with a fast 10-1 start in the first set. Later in the set, a kill from Bryce Thomas made it 18-17 in favor of the home team. A final kill from Carter Schmidt gave the set to the Firebirds 25-15. 

Carthage continued the momentum in the second going up 10-4 to start. Though Augustana (Ill.) (9-7) got within seven, Schmidt connected on another kill to take a two-set lead 25-17. 

In the final set of the day, the home team held an 11-7 margin to begin. The Firebirds then put together an 11-2 run flipping the score to 21-9. Though the Vikings got within eight with a kill, Carthage won the match with a kill from Zach Bulthuis 25-17. 

The Firebirds will now see who they will play in the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Tournament which will be announced on Monday, April 12 at 9 a.m.

Quick Facts

  • Carter Schmidt led the Firebirds in kills with 11 while Matt Slivinski registered 10. 
  • Slivinski also had four total blocks while Gene McNulty had 29 assists. 
  • Carthage finished 42-0 in sets in conference play this season while hitting .323 and .303 in sets two and three respectively. 
  • It is the first CCIW Conference Tournament title for the program and first under head coach JW Kieckhefer.
