Firebirds Fly Away from Falcons in Opening NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship Match

SALEM, Va. — The No. 1 seed Carthage College men's volleyball team opened up the 2021 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 win over Messiah on Thursday at the Salem Civic Center.

Playing as the No. 8 seed, Messiah (17-3) started with a 7-3 advantage in set one however, Carthage (21-0) battled back with a kill from Matt Slivinski, shrinking the deficit to two. Later in the set, Carthage used a 12-5 run to win the set 25-22 with a final ace from Slivinski. 

With set two tied at eight, a kill from Slivinski and an ace from Conner Lilly made it 10-8. The Falcons got within one until an 11-2 run for the Firebirds won the set 25-15 sparked by kills from Bryce Thomas and Slivinski. 

In the third, a kill from Thomas made it 8-1 early on. Zach Bulthuis added a kill which extended the Carthage lead to 13-7. After Messiah got within five, Parker Connolly connected on a kill at 16-10. Later, a block from Schmidt and Bulthuis made it 22-14, as the Firebirds went on to win the set 25-19. 

Carthage advances to the final four and will await the winner of Dominican versus Vassar. The Firebirds will return to the court on Friday, April 23 at 3 p.m. CST.
