Firebirds Take CCIW Match over Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. — The No. 2 Carthage College men's volleyball team collected another straight-set victory over Millikin on Thursday night.

Carthage (17-0, 11-0 CCIW) started with a 10-3 score in set one. Later, a kill from Carter Schmidt made it 19-8 as the Firebirds won the set 25-15.

After Millikin (0-12, 0-11 CCIW) began with a 6-4 lead in the second, the visitors fought back to take the lead with a pair of Big Blue attack errors. After the score was locked at 14, an 8-5 run for Carthage put the Firebirds in front 22-17 as a final block from Andrew Otto and Nick Cookingham gave Carthage a two-set lead 25-20.

The Firebirds continued the momentum on the third as a kill from Otto made it 8-3. Later, a kill from Kyle Radecki extended the Carthage advantage to 14-8. Millikin got within seven before the Firebirds took the straight-set victory 25-15.

Next up, Carthage stays on the road taking on North Park in the final regular season match of 2021 on Saturday, April 3 at 2 p.m.

Head Coach JW Kieckhefer

"The defensive effort was really good today. Kyle Cohan did a great job of making hustle plays and digs. Andrew Otto ran the defense at the net well and provided a great lift for us with his 4 blocks.

I was proud of Nick Cookingham for running the offense and distributing the ball. Getting balls to the middles was part of the game plan and to get the 26 balls was a testament to our passing."
