Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Carthage Comes Out on Top With 11-10 Road Win

DANVILLE, Ky. — In a game that came down to the final seconds, the Carthage College men's lacrosse team were the victors in a road game at Centre College, picking up an 11-10 win on Saturday at Farris Stadium.

Less than a minute into the game, freshman Andrew Johnson gave the Firebirds (3-0) the lead before Brad Dodds extended it moments later. After a score by Noah Lindner with eight minutes left in the quarter, Centre (2-1) responded with two of their own. Michael Stell would find the back of the next to make it 4-2 by the end of the first period. A pair of early second-quarter goals by Centre would mark one of three ties on the day.

While the Firebirds would take a 6-4 advantage into halftime, the home team scored three unanswered to take their first lead of the game with 9:52 left in the third period. However, goals by Colin Poitras, Stell, Lindner, and Johnson put Carthage back on top by three as the two teams went to the final quarter.

With 6:45 left on the clock, Stell extended the Firebird lead to 11-7 before Centre responded minutes later. Two-straight goals from the home team within the final minutes of play got them within one, but Carthage held on to remain undefeated to begin their 2021 season.

Carthage is scheduled to take on the Milwaukee School of Engineering next, traveling north for a 7 p.m. match on Wednesday, March 10.

Head Coach David Neff

"I am proud of the guys. There were a lot of seniors on the field today on both sides and it was a tough early season game. We made a lot of mental mistakes down the stretch and almost gave it away, but when you can grit it out and get a win on the road against a quality opponent it's a positive for the season. Guthrie played great between the pipes and our defense played better in the second half, the late goals were not on them. It's time to get back to work with a lot of games ahead of us."
