Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Firebirds Storm Back in 12-6 Road Win

MILWAUKEE — After going down 4-0 to begin the contest, the Carthage men's lacrosse team surged back to keep their undefeated record intact with a 12-6 victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday night at Viets Field.

While the home team took an early lead to begin the match, Alec Gern scored a last-second goal before the horn to make it 4-1 at the end of the first quarter in favor of MSOE (0-4). Minutes into the second period, freshman Andrew Johnson scored back-to-back goals, before Brad Dodds found Colin Poitras near the front of the goal, who spun and fired a shot into the back of the net to even the score at four.

Early in the third quarter, Johnson and Dodds added two quick points for the Firebirds (4-0), capping off a 6-0 run. After MSOE responded just moments later to make it a one score game, Carthage rattled off four goals in the final six-and-a-half minutes of the quarter, as Poitras netted a pair followed by Gern and Johnson yet again.

The Firebirds added two more midway through the final frame, before the home team scored once more to set the scoreboard at 12-6 at the final buzzer.

Carthage is scheduled to return home to Art Keller Field next, hosting Southwestern University on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Head Coach David Neff

"It's nice to get another win but we were not ready to play a college lacrosse game today, and it started with our approach the minute we got off the bus, and stayed with us through the first half. I thought MSOE played a great first period and we just continued to shoot ourselves in the foot with bad decisions and turnovers, so we found ourselves in a hole. If we want to be a good team, we are going to need a much better effort than we had tonight. We have a big one Friday night with a very good offense in Southwestern."

Quick Facts

  • With Andrew Johnson scoring four goals, and Colin Poitras three, the two are tied for the team lead with 14 goals in just four games so far this season.
  • After causing three turnovers today, Liam O'Connor moved up to seventh in school history with 71 for his career.
  • Now with 168 career saves, Kyle Guthrie rose to fourth in program history.
