Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Carthage Falls in CCIW Quarterfinals at North Park 55-50

CHICAGO — Playing in the quarterfinal round of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament, the seventh seeded Carthage College women's basketball team fell to the two seed North Park 55-50 on Thursday night at North Park Gymnasium.

While Lauren Knight hit a technical free throw to begin the game for Carthage (3-10, 3-9 CCIW), North Park (9-4, 8-4 CCIW) was first to score in regulation, taking a 7-2 early lead. The Firebirds would tie it up at seven on a jumper from Addison Ebeling, before Knight sank a layup to take a two-point lead with three minutes remaining in the quarter. Carthage held the home team scoreless for nearly seven straight minutes, ending the period with a 15-10 lead. The Vikings would retake the lead in the second quarter before taking a 30-21 advantage into halftime.

Early in the third, Kelsey Coshun converted a three-point play on a score down low and free throw, later hitting a pair from the charity stripe to get the Firebirds within two points. Amanda Larson would tie the game twice, at 30 and 32, before giving the visitors a lead with three and a half left in the period. A layup and two free throws by Nansy Velev, and free throws from Bridget Barrett to end the quarter gave Carthage a six point lead.

As the game neared its end, Barrett came up with a key block, before hitting a layup at the opposite end of the court, making it 48-45 in favor of the Firebirds with two and a half minutes left to play. However, North Park would tie the game on a three pointer, eventually holding on for the five-point win.

While Carthage exits the CCIW Tournament, they will play one final game in their 2021 season next week, as they travel to Lake Forest College on Wednesday, March 10 for a 7 p.m. matchup.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"What a roller coaster that game was. We got the jump in the first quarter, but they controlled the second. The kids responded to the challenge in the third in a big way, but we had too many turnovers and allowed too many offensive rebounds for North Park."

Quick Facts

  • Leading the team with 11 points, Kelsey Coshun has scored in double figures in three of the last five games.
  • The team's leading rebounder, now averaging 8.7 per game, freshman Bridget Barrett tied her season-high with 15 boards.
  • Barrett added three blocks and a pair of steals on the defensive end, and now leads the team in both stats.
