Firebirds End 2021 Season With Strong Road Win

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Carthage College women's basketball team closed out their 2021 campaign with a 77-51 victory at Lake Forest on Wednesday night at the Lake Forest Sports and Recreation Center.

Kelsey Coshun got Carthage (4-10) rolling after Bridget Barrett found her down low for a layup. Amanda Larson would find Margueret Spear for two, scoring through a foul and connecting on the ensuing free throw, before Spear scored from three on yet another assist from Larson. A layup from Coshun would finish a 12-0 run within the first three minutes for the Firebirds, before the road team went on to hold a 21-10 lead by the end of the period.

While Lake Forest (1-5) struck first to start the second quarter, Coshun quickly responded with another layup. Minutes later, Lauren Knight connected from deep to make it 30-12, with Addison Ebeling, Spear, and Ayanna Ester making three straight three pointers following a Lake Forest timeout. The Firebirds would hold a commanding lead at the midway break, 41-16.

Knight scored first for Carthage in the third with another three, as the visitors' hot shooting from beyond the arc continued on back-to-back makes from Ebeling to set the score at 52-27. Owning a 59-34 lead at the end of the third quarter, the Firebirds would go on to win by a final tally of 77-51 to end their season.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"It was nice to get off to a start like we did, it really set the tone for the night. To say this was an interesting season would certainly be an understatement, but I'm proud of our kids and how they handled everything along the way. We said in the beginning of the year that just getting a chance to play games was a win. This group learned some lessons on playing at this level and grew from them. Over the second half of the season we could argue that for a couple of possessions in three games, we could have had a seven game winning streak. There's plenty of room for this group to grow and we have a positive feeling from the end of the year to jump off from going into next season."
