Game Recap: #6 Men's Volleyball |

Firebirds Take Non-Conference Road Tilt over MSOE

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — In the last non-conference game of the season, the No. 2 Carthage College men's volleyball team picked up another straight-set win over MSOE on Friday evening at Kern Arena.

Carthage (15-0) began with a quick 7-2 advantage with a kill from Matt Slivinski and an MSOE (7-5) ball handling error. Following a Raiders timeout, the home team narrowed the gap to three until back-to-back kills from Carter Schmidt and Parker Connolly made it 15-10. Though MSOE got within four, Carthage put the set away with a kill from Slivinski 25-19.

The home team started the second with an 8-3 margin however, the Firebirds rallied tying it at 15 with a Raiders service error. With the score even at 20, the visitors ended the set with a 5-1 run taking a two-set lead.

In the third set, a kill from Bryce Thomas made it 12-8 in favor of Carthage. Out of a Firebirds timeout, a Raiders attack error and a kill from Zach Bulthuis put Carthage up 19-14. The visitors closed out the match with back-to-back blocks for the straight-set victory.

Next up, the volleyball squad return to Tarble Arena for the final regular season home game tomorrow, March 27 against Illinois Wesleyan at 2 p.m.

Head Coach JW Kieckhefer

"The second match of this three-match week and I am so proud of our group to be able to get a big win in three sets! I thought we did a really nice job today of dictating play with winning the serve and pass battle. That was the biggest objective for us tonight and I thought we did a great job of that.

Our backcourt defense was really good today. We are led by the effort of Kyle Cohan and Blake Arnold and I thought they set the tone. The hustle plays and digs were there early and it allowed us to break open an early lead.

It was important to get that match finished in three to get ready for a really good Illinois Wesleyan team tomorrow. We need to get refocused on them and ready for another battle. Please tune in and help celebrate our five seniors on their senior day: Blake Arnold, Parker Connolly, Conner Lilly, Mike Motyka and Bryce Thomas!"
