Firebirds Claim Doubleheader at Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS — Playing in their first road games of the 2021 season, the Carthage baseball team picked up a pair of wins at Fontbonne, 2-1 and 9-4, on Saturday at Shaw Park.

In game one, Carthage (3-2) jumped out of the gate with a run in the first inning, as Colton Klein came in to score on a double by Bryce Prybylinski. After the home team tied the game at one in the third inning, the pitchers would take over, keeping the score even into extra innings. Behind strong outings from Jacob DeLabio and Ben Rietz to close it out, the Firebirds would win in the 12th inning, after Ben Levicki drove in Austin Prybylinski on a single to center field.

Once again, the Firebirds took an early lead on Fontbonne (6-6) in the second game of the day, scoring a run in each of the first two innings. In the third, Klein hit a two-run double before coming around to score on a groundout, making it 5-0. While the home team would respond in the bottom of the frame with three runs, Carthage plated a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, scoring once again in the final two, to go on to win 9-4.

The Firebirds eye a sweep tomorrow when they take on Fontbonne once more at 11 a.m.

Head Coach Augie Schmidt IV

"Today was against a good team, and their big pitcher had a good game against us in game one. DeLabio came in and was fantastic. Our pitching was really good today and we hit enough to win after a tough day on Wednesday, so we'll take it."

Quick Facts
