Carthage Falls at Home to Elmhurst 11-7

KENOSHA, Wis. — Collecting 12 hits and scoring seven runs wasn't enough, as the Carthage baseball team dropped their conference opener to Elmhurst 11-7 on Wednesday at Augie Schmidt Field.

The Bluejays (5-2) struck first in the third inning with a trio of runs, before a sac-fly by Colton Klein in the bottom of the frame got the Firebirds (1-2) on the board. After falling behind 5-1, Matt Pratscher hit an RBI single before Cody Phelps belted a bases-loaded triple to tie the game at five. Elmhurst would take a 9-5 advantage in the top of the fifth inning, with Carthage plating one more in the bottom of the fifth. However, the home team was unable to catch up by game's end.

Up next for the Firebirds is a weekend trip to St. Louis to take on Fontbonne, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 20 at 1 p.m.

Head Coach Augie Schmidt IV

"It was a tough day to play, and tough for our pitching. We're not going to win many games giving up 16 free baserunners so we need to clean that up. We've got some work to do before this weekend."

Quick Facts

  • Cody Phelps collected his first RBI of the season on a three-run triple, his first three-bagger since March 23, 2019.
  • Bryce Prybylinski connected for a double in the fifth inning, his third in the Firebird's three games.
  • Jacob DeLabio came on in relief in the final inning, pitching his second two-strikeout and no-run frame of the season.
