Firebirds Split Opening Doubleheader With Ripon

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College baseball team began their 2021 season with a 5-0 win over Ripon, before falling 12-6 to split a doubleheader on Saturday at Augie Schmidt Field.

The Firebirds (1-1) got on the board in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Johnny Belskis, before a three-run homer from Colton Klein and yet another RBI double by Belskis made it 5-0 in the following inning. After coming on in relief in the third inning, Nick Hamilton would throw six scoreless frames to pick up his first win of the season.

To begin game two, Austin Prybylinski put Carthage up early on an RBI single in the first inning. After the Firebirds plated three more in the third, highlighted by another RBI double from Belskis, Ripon (2-5) responded with a run in the fourth and five in the fifth to take the lead 6-4. The visitors would extend their lead before eventually winning game two by six runs.

Carthage is scheduled to begin conference play next when they host Elmhurst on Tuesday, March 16 at 3:30 p.m. at Augie Schmidt Field.
