Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Johnson Guides Carthage to Victory

KENOSHA, Wis. — In a battle that saw five ties, an impressive day from freshman Andrew Johnson helped propel the Carthage men's lacrosse team past Southwestern on Friday night, as the Firebirds remained undefeated with a 10-7 win at Art Keller Field.

Johnson continued his strong start to his collegiate career today, scoring the first goal for the Firebirds (5-0) just over a minute in. After Southwestern (2-2) drew it even at one apiece minutes later, Robert Dakan quickly responded to reclaim the lead. A goal by Colin Poitras for Carthage and a score from the visitors set the board at 3-2 after the first quarter.

While the Pirates tied it once again to open the second period, Michael Stell found Johnson on a man-up opportunity to make it 4-3 quickly after. An impressive shot by Brad Dodds found the back of the net to put the home team up by two, before Southwestern scored three-straight to close the half.

Early in the third quarter, an own goal by the visitors tied the match at six points before Southwestern responded. In the final minutes of the period, Johnson tied the match at seven before George Burchfield found Johnson for another score with seconds remaining before the third-quarter horn. Johnson and Stell would each net a pair of goals in the final period to seal the win.

The Firebirds will be back on the road next, as they're scheduled to travel to Concordia (Wis.) on Wednesday, March 17 at 4 p.m.

Head Coach David Neff

"It was a tough game with a lot of penalties and turnovers. I thought our defense came up big and bailed us out tonight. They cleared well and shut down some good players, including Poremba on number 26. Only allowing two goals in the second half, and considering two of the seven goals tonight were man up, the guys played very good on six vs six. I thought the faceoff guys also held their own against one of the best D3 faceoff players in the country. Offensively, we are sputtering right now but we will figure it out. We obviously are missing Lindner out there, but I think we should be better than we have been. We need to start playing better off ball, attacking the cage, and need more shots. Andrew was our only consistent option to make a play, and we need some guys to step up. We need to start learning from our mistakes in order to improve."
