Firebirds Close Out Regular Season With 58-48 Win Over Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. — In their regular season finale, the Carthage women's basketball team defeated Elmhurst on the road 58-48 on Saturday at R.A. Faganel Hall.

The Firebirds (3-9, 3-9 CCIW) struck first as Lauren Knight found Kelsey Coshun down low for a layup, drawing a foul and converting the three point play. The teams would draw even at five, seven, and 12 points apiece in the quarter, with Amanda Larson dropping in a layup to give Carthage a 14-12 lead heading into the second period.

Elmhurst (3-9, 3-9 CCIW) drew the score even yet again minutes into the second frame, with Margueret Spear responding with a three pointer to regain the lead for Carthage. After Samm Carsello put the Firebirds up seven on a pair of free throws, the visitors would take a five-point advantage into halftime, up 31-26.

Carthage would continue to extend their lead in the third quarter, grabbing a double-digit advantage with 5:45 on the clock after a Bridget Barrett layup. The Firebirds would lead by as much as 15 points in the third, holding a secure edge throughout the final period to pick up a 10-point win.

Up next for the Firebirds is a CCIW Tournament matchup with North Central on Tuesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. in Tarble Arena.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"The team gave a solid effort today. We were much better on the defensive end then we were on Thursday, especially at the three point line. A big third quarter got us in a pretty good position to finish, and we did a good job on both boards. We got the lead early and held it most of the day. Ayanna Ester and Samm Carsello made some key contributions off the bench."
