Women’s Basketball Drops Close Game with Elmhurst

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College women's basketball team fell in a one-possession game with Elmhurst on Thursday night, 65-62 in Tarble Arena.

While the visitors began with a 5-0 run, Bridget Barrett got Carthage (2-9, 2-9 CCIW) on the board with a layup just over a minute into the game. Following an Elmhurst (3-8, 3-8 CCIW) run, the Bluejays would own a 22-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. After a three from Margueret Spear, Kelsey Coshun pulled in an offensive rebound and sank a layup on the following possession to bring the game within three. However, Elmhurst would hold their lead through the remainder of the first half, as the Firebirds trailed at the midway point 35-29.

A minute into the third period Lauren Knight found Spear for three to make it 37-34, with Coshun scoring down low to make it a one point game moments later. Coshun would continue to roll, converting a three-point play on a layup and free throw, before giving Carthage the lead after Barrett found her down low to make it 41-40. The visitors would reclaim the lead however, going back out in front 49-44 to close the quarter.

As the final 10-minute frame neared an end, the Firebirds got within two after Amanda Larson connected from the free throw line, before the senior once again hit a pair from the charity stripe to make it 63-62 with 52 seconds remaining. However, Elmhurst would hold on to their lead as the clock hit zero.

The Firebirds will play their final game of the regular season this Saturday, traveling to Elmhurst for a rematch at 2 p.m.
