Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Carthage Falls in Final Moments at North Park

CHICAGO — The Carthage College women's basketball team narrowly missed grabbing their third consecutive win, falling in the closing seconds 56-54 at North Park on Tuesday night in the North Park Gymnasium.

The home team was first on the board as they took a 6-0 lead before Lauren Knight put Carthage (2-8, 2-8 CCIW) in the score column with a shot from beyond the arc. A three-point play on a layup and free throw from Kelsey Coshun got the Firebirds within two, as Knight found Bridget Barrett down low for an open layup to even the score at 10 midway through the quarter. A 13-3 run to close out the first period would put Carthage up 18-13 heading into the second frame.

While North Park (7-3, 7-3 CCIW) would climb back and claim the lead midway through the quarter, Barrett evened the score at 22 on a free throw with just over four minutes left in the half. The two teams would head to their locker rooms tied at 25.

The Vikings opened the second half with a three to take the lead, with Amanda Larson connecting from deep later to give the Firebirds a four point advantage. The two teams traded the lead throughout the third period, but it was the home team who were out in front 49-44 headed into the final quarter.

Knight would tie the game at 50 on a deep three early in the fourth, once again coming up with a clutch score to even the score at 54 with only two minutes remaining. After North Park responded at the other end of the floor, Carthage was unable to score in the final moments.

Up next, Carthage plays their final home game on Thursday, February 25 when they host Elmhurst for Senior Day at 7 p.m. in Tarble Arena.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"This game was played the way I thought it would be, and we were right there to win it. I like what I'm seeing from our kids, we just didn't finish enough offensive possessions to close the game out tonight."
