Freshmen Guide Carthage to 70-62 Win at North Central

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Behind strong performances from their first-year players, the Carthage College women's basketball team defeated North Central 70-62 in Gregory Arena on Thursday night.

Carthage (1-7, 1-7 CCIW) was first on the scoreboard as Margueret Spear found an open Lauren Knight for a three-pointer before Kelsey Coshun sank a layup to make it 5-0. The road team would connect on three more makes from beyond the arc in the quarter, with a triple from Spear matched with two from Ayanna Ester, to give Carthage a 19-14 advantage after 10 minutes of play.

While North Central (1-7, 1-7 CCIW) took the lead minutes into the second quarter, Knight connected from three to retake the lead for Carthage. The home team would keep pace with the visitors throughout the period, but it was Carthage who entered the lockers at halftime with the lead, 36-33.

North Central inched out in front to begin the third frame before Carthage evened the score at 41 after a three from Knight. While the two teams traded leads, it was the Cardinals that would head into the final quarter with a  54-50 advantage.

The home team took an eight point lead with 7:48 left in the contest, before Bridget Barrett responded with a layup at the other end of the court to make it 60-56. A layup by the freshman minutes later would give Carthage a 63-62 lead headed into the final stretch, with a barrage of free throws in the closing moments sealing the win.

The Carthage women's team returns home this weekend and hosts North Central in Tarble Arena on Saturday, February 20 at 2 p.m.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"This one had plenty of peaks and valleys. We played well out of the gate but then had a bit of a brain cramp to start the third quarter that gave North Central a chance to go on a run. But our kids showed some toughness in the fourth quarter and made gritty plays on both ends of the floor. Hopefully this is the start of some better results for our team down the stretch."
