WHEATON, Ill. — The Carthage College women's basketball team fell 47-40 in a close game at Wheaton College on Saturday in King Arena.
Margueret Spear hit a three-pointer to open the game and put Carthage (0-6, 0-6 CCIW) on the board first. After each team traded leads, Wheaton (7-1, 7-1 CCIW) went out in front by four before
Lauren Knight dropped in a layup to set the score at 12-10 after the first quarter.
In the second period, the Carthage defense held Wheaton to just four points compared to the visitor's 11, giving the Carthage women's team a 21-16 lead at the half.
Midway through the third quarter, back-to-back makes from deep by Knight and Spear put Carthage out in front by 12, 30-18. Wheaton would climb back early in the final period however, tying the game with six minutes left before eventually claiming a lead they would hold until the final buzzer.
Carthage will hit the road for their next game, as they're scheduled to travel to Carroll on Tuesday, February 16 for a 7 p.m. game.
"This group is going to get there. We did a solid job defensively most of the day, but the rebounding did us in. We're still trying to find our offensive stride. This game was a grind and we just didn't make enough plays to finish it off."
