Carthage Falls 77-66 in Home Contest with Wheaton

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College women's basketball team dropped a 77-66 game against Wheaton on Thursday night in Tarble Arena.

Carthage (0-5, 0-5 CCIW) jumped out to a quick early lead, as threes from Lauren Knight, Bridget Barrett, and Amanda Larson forced a Wheaton (6-1, 6-1 CCIW) timeout just minutes into the game. After the visitors tied the game at 16 with 3:55 left, they would go on to take a one-point lead into the second quarter, 24-23.

The two teams went back-and-forth throughout the second period, with four ties and eight lead changes. In the closing moments of the first half, Ayanna Ester sunk a three-point shot to put Carthage up 38-36. Wheaton would respond with a make from deep of their own before Larson gave the home team a lead yet again on another three. The Thunder closed the half with a make from deep to take a 42-41 lead into the break.

Entering the final 10 minutes of play down eight points, 58-50, Carthage would make it a one-possession game at 58-56 with 7:50 left on the clock. However, Wheaton would hold the lead through the remainder of the the game, claiming an 11-point victory.

Carthage will be back in action against Wheaton this Saturday, February 13 when they travel to King Arena for a 2 p.m. tipoff.

  • Amanda Larson led Carthage in scoring tonight with 19 points, while grabbing five rebounds with three assists.
  • In her first collegiate start, freshman Bridget Barrett scored a season-best 13 points with seven boards, adding two blocks and a steal on the defensive end.
  • The team recorded 11 steals tonight, led by Kelsey Coshun and Lauren Knight who each grabbed three.
