Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Defensive Performance Leads Firebirds Over Vikings

CHICAGO — Holding their opponent to 50 points or less for the fourth time in the last five games, the Carthage women's basketball team took down North Park 55-42 in the North Park Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

The Firebirds (5-3, 2-1 CCIW) jumped on the scoreboard first with a free throw, before Ayanna Ester connected from beyond the arc to make it 4-2. Midway through the opening quarter, the Vikings (6-2, 0-1 CCIW) tied the game at seven, before momentum swung to the Firebirds for the rest of the period. A three pointer by Nansy Valev put the Firebirds up 16-8, and eventually led 16-11 after the first 10 minutes of play.

Throughout the second quarter Carthage continued to stay in front, as Kelsey Coshun scored first on a layup, before a pair of free throws from Addison Ebeling put the Firebirds up by nine. By the end of the half Carthage pushed their advantage to double digits, as a layup by Valev with seconds left made it a 31-21 game at halftime.

While the home team scored first to open the second half, Destiny Antoine hit a shot to push the lead back out to 10 at 35-25. Bridget Barrett would add a pair of free throws near the end of the third quarter, setting up another 10-point advantage for Carthage as they head to the final period. A layup from Lauren Herrmann and free throws from Barrett made it 43-29 with just over eight minutes left to play. Adding two more threes within minutes of each other, Ester pushed the Firebirds advantage to 16 midway through the final quarter. Carthage would hold on to win by 13 points.

The team continues their CCIW schedule this weekend as they take on Augustana next on Saturday, December 11 at 5 p.m. on the road.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"I'm proud of the team's response after Saturday's game. We've been pretty solid defensively in all three conference games, and tonight we were plus-six on the boards, which helped. We got some offense in the first quarter that helped get us off to a good start."
