Carthage Takes Care of Business in Road Win at Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Yet another strong defensive performance from the Carthage women's basketball team yielded another victory, as they came out on top against Augustana 62-49 at the Roy J. Carver Center on Saturday evening.

While the Firebirds (6-3, 3-1 CCIW) were first on the board with a three pointer from Lauren Knight, the Vikings (5-4, 0-2 CCIW) responded with a make from deep to tie the game. The home team would take the lead, and own a five-point advantage after the first quarter, leading 10-5. A quick three from Lauren Herrmann opened up the second quarter, with Addison Ebeling tying it up at 12 on a three pointer of her own. The two teams battled throughout the rest of the first half, as four ties and four lead changes ended with a 25-25 score heading into the halftime break.

The Firebirds came out of the locker room hot in the third quarter, opening up with a 12-3 run, with the final six coming from Destiny Antoine on a three, layup, and free throw. Leading by as much as 10 in the period, Augustana would cut the Carthage lead to five, as the two headed to the final 10 minutes of play with the score at 46-41.

Despite the Vikings getting within two points midway through the fourth quarter, the Firebirds were able to pull away in the final minutes on clutch shooting from Herrmann and Ayanna Ester. Outshooting the Vikings 57% to 15% in the fourth quarter, the Firebirds would pick up the victory to move to 3-1 in conference play.

Up next, Carthage will head to Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a 3 p.m. game on Monday, December 20.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"We're finding ways and we're getting there. I get a little animated on the sidelines because there are still details we're missing, and we're going to have to clean those up before the season gets deeper and the stakes get higher. We didn't have a great start, but then started to roll a little bit. We made some shots, Lauren Herrmann made some big threes. We turned it over a little more than I'd like us to, but won the rebound battle and shot the bell well overall. We weren't good on the boards early in the season. Today, getting Bridget back out there has been huge, she keeps a lot of balls alive for us, same with Morrissey, she's so active. We were able to pull it all together tonight."
