Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Firebirds Drop Road Contest at North Central

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — While the Carthage women's basketball team was able to slowly climb back in the second half, they ran out of time and fell to North Central 50-40 on Saturday evening at Gregory Arena.

The home team took an advantage early, before the Firebirds (4-3, 1-1 CCIW) hit the scoreboard on a shot by Lauren Knight to make it 8-2 at 6:39 in the opening quarter. The Cardinals (4-4, 1-0 CCIW) would extend their lead to as much as 10, before holding a 16-8 lead on Carthage by the end of the first period. The home team would remain out in front through the second quarter, with the Firebirds entering the halftime break trailing 31-16.

North Central held their lead throughout the third quarter, with Knight cutting into the deficit at the end of the period on a three to make it 42-28. Carthage scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to cut the Cardinal lead to eight, however, the clock would run out on the Firebirds, as they fell by 10.

Carthage remains on the road next and will take on North Park, traveling to Chicago on Wednesday, December 8 for a 7 p.m. contest.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"For as good as we felt on Wednesday with the result, we didn't do a good job today. We talked about this being a great opportunity to make a statement, and we did that the other day. But today, we took a bit of a punch in the beginning, and kept taking them. We didn't play physically within the game, we got out of line, and North Central made things happen offensively. On the other end, we didn't feel like we could go anywhere either. We put ourselves in a bad spot and tried to take the ball to the basket, but some of those weren't going. We were 4-28 from the field in the first half and missed layups and went 0-10 from three. We didn't finish well on the offensive end, and didn't finish defensive possessions when we needed to, and as a result, you get a loss."
