Carthage Picks Up 10-Point Victory at St. Olaf Tournament

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Behind a career day from Lauren Knight, the Carthage women's basketball team defeated St. Olaf 68-58 on Wednesday in their first game of the Country Inn and Suites Holiday Classic at the Skoglund Center.

While the home team was first to score on their opening possession, the Firebirds (8-3) quickly responded as Lauren Knight found Elena Knebel for a layup. Back-to-back threes from Knight extended the Carthage lead, and a 10-0 run made it 10-2 midway through the first quarter. The Oles (3-5) would climb back however, hitting a layup at the horn for the end of the first quarter to take a 20-19 lead into the second period.

St. Olaf held the lead through most of the second quarter, as Carthage trailed by as much as 10, 34-24 with 5:44 left on the clock. However, the Firebirds stormed back to close out the half, going on a 13-1 run as Bridget Barrett dropped in a layup to reclaim the lead for Carthage 37-35.

The two teams went back-and-forth to open the second half, drawing even on the scoreboard four times, before Carthage reclaimed the lead on a free throw from Marianna Morrissey. As the third quarter neared its end, Morrissey blocked a pass and came down with the ball, taking the steal across court for a layup, giving the Firebirds a five-point advantage headed into the final period.

Carthage controlled their lead through the fourth quarter, as St. Olaf got within two with just over four minutes left on the clock. The Firebirds closed out the game for their fourth-straight victory, all on the road, winning by 10 points.

The team will play in their second game of the tournament tomorrow, December 30 at 3 p.m., when they take on UW-Oshkosh.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"In the first half, I think we started great and were up 10 or so, but then St. Olaf started knocking down three pointers, and now we're down 10. I wasn't sure if we had enough to fight this one off, but the kids were wonderful. I like to do things simple, we just needed to do the basic stuff today. I think the way we played in the second half was great too, and we did a good job defensively. Sometimes, it's a function of the lead, but they obviously shoot the ball well, and with confidence, so I thought we were in a bit of trouble at one point. But we were able to make a run and walk into the locker room up two points after trailing. I think we had a pretty good second half, and while we weren't entirely dominant, we still did a great job today."
