Game Recap: #22 Men's Basketball |

Slow Start Dooms Firebirds at Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Carthage College men's basketball team dropped a 92-82 contest to Augustana (Ill.) on the road in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action on Saturday night at the Carver PE Center.

Augustana (Ill.) (5-4, 1-1 CCIW) started with a 17-3 lead sparked by four-straight threes. Later in the half, a steal by Alonzo Paul and a layup on the other end by Garrett Horner cut the margin to 10 at 24-14. Carthage (4-5, 0-4 CCIW) battled back getting within two off a three from Kyle Kostes and a jumper from Kyle Czerak but Augustana (Ill.) ended the half with a 15-5 run heading to the intermission break up 45-33.

Colton Sigel three-pointer and an easy layup from Paul cut the Vikings advantage to 59-49 with under 13 minutes left in the second. Fillip Bulatovic made it an eight-point game with another layup 59-51 with 12:15 left. Later, Paul sank a jumper which made the score 65-57. The Firebirds whittled down the Vikings margin to three with a jumper from Kostes and layup from Horner but Augustana (Ill.) went back ahead 78-67 with a long-range bucket. After a lone free throw from Czerak, a Vikings layup put the home team ahead 80-69. Horner added a pair of free throws making the score 81-73 but Augustana (Ill.) went on to win the game 92-82.

Carthage will return in non-conference action against Beloit on Tuesday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Djurickovic

"We dug ourselves behind a little bit to start. We fought back as best we could but we couldn't stabilize when Fillip Bulatovic was out. I thought Alonzo Paul did fantastic today. He gave us great effort on the defensive end of the floor, he worked his tail off for 25 minutes today, valued the basketball, and really did a good job at the defensive end. Kyle Kostes did some great things for us today. He is an aggressive offensive player who can score at all three levels of the floor. I'm really excited for both of those two to get their feet wet with conference play and hopefully, we can build off that with those guys. Garrett Horner is doing everything we're asking for and more. I couldn't be prouder of his effort on the day. For the last eight minutes of the second half, we had three freshmen on the court the entire time. They really played better than you would expect in a matchup like this. Kyle Czerak continues to be a leader for us on the court. He has become a rock-solid senior, he knows where the ball is supposed to go, he knows where he's supposed to be at all times and that's what makes him a valuable piece to this program. Although we lost today, there have been some good moments, there have been some good showings from some of the younger guys. I think we are becoming a better basketball team now. Now we have time to grow and get better within the next few days."
