Firebirds Run Past Beloit 88-67 in Non-Conference Battle

BELOIT, Wis. — The Carthage College men's basketball team added another victory on the season picking up a 88-67 road win over Beloit College on Tuesday night at Flood Arena.

Carthage (5-5) came out with a 7-2 margin to start, off buckets from Nemi Ostojic, Fillip Bulatovic, and Kyle Czerak. Garrett Horner rattled in a long-distance three which made the score 16-7 with 13:58 left in the first. Beloit (2-9) then got within three off a driving layup but the Firebirds moved the lead back to double-digits with a layup from Tyler Guest, 23-13. After the Buccaneers got within six, a 9-2 run extended the Carthage advantage to 36-25. Back-to-back layups, a three-pointer from Colton Sigel, and a layup from Kyle Kostes closed out the half for Carthage as the visitors held a 49-32 heading to the halftime break.

The Firebirds started the second half with a 14-4 run sparked by Siegel scoring seven of the 14 points. Later, a Kostes three put Carthage ahead 71-45. With 7:34 left, Guest sank a layup which put the Firebirds up 25 but Beloit made a small run getting the deficit to 17 with a pair of free throws and a three-point bucket. The home team then made it a 15-point game off a layup with 2:25 left but Carthage cruised to the 88-67 victory.

Up next, Carthage stays on the road facing Webster on Saturday, December 18 with a 3 p.m. tipoff.

Head Coach Steve Djurickovic

"Always nice to get a win on the road! Super proud of the resiliency of this group. We had our best practice of the year Monday and that effort continued into the game tonight. We are getting better every day and learning how to play together. Fillip Bulatovic and Garrett Horner got us off to a good start offensively in the first half, but the effort from Kyle Kostes on the defensive side gave us a huge lift. Tyler Guest and Nemi Ostojic both battled their interior players the entire game. Colton Sigel had his best defensive game of the year and Alonzo Paul continues to give us a lift. One more game in St. Louis before Christmas Break. Need another great effort like tonight!"
