Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Carthage Hands No. 5 Wheaton First Loss of the Season

KENOSHA, Wis. — Hosting the fifth-ranked team in the country, the Carthage women's basketball team defeated No. 5 Wheaton 50-39 on Wednesday night in Tarble Arena.

An early free throw from Lauren Knight, layup by Lauren Herrmann, and three pointer from Hermann put the Firebirds (4-2, 1-0 CCIW) up 6-0 to begin the game and secure the lead. Despite the Thunder (7-1, 0-1 CCIW) responding with a quick three of their own, Carthage went out in front by seven on a make from beyond the arc by Destiny Antoine. The home team would take the seven-point advantage into the second period, up 15-8.

Midway through the second quarter, Wheaton tied the game after hitting a three to make it 15-all with 6:12 on the clock. However, the Firebirds closed out the first half with a 10-0 run, with the final five points coming from Ayanna Ester to put the home team up 25-10 at the half.

Once more, Carthage controlled the pace of the game to begin the third frame, taking a 14-point lead on a layup from Herrmann at the 6:28-mark. The Firebirds held their double-digit advantage throughout most of the quarter, as a pair of free throws from the Thunder set the scoreboard at 39-28 headed into the final period.

A layup by Antoine and free throw from Nansy Velev made it 42-28 just one minute into the fourth quarter, before a three from Herrmann pushed the home lead to 15, at 45-30, with 6:31 remaining in the contest. While the visitors would get within ten, the Carthage defense continued to make their presence felt on each possession, helping the Firebirds hold on for the victory in their conference opener.

Up next, Carthage heads to Naperville, Ill. to take on North Central on Saturday, December 4 at 5 p.m.
