Game Recap: #22 Men's Basketball |

Firebirds Battle No. 5 Thunder to the Wire

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's basketball team fought hard against No. 5 Wheaton (Ill.) but came just short, falling 65-64 on Wednesday at Tarble Arena. 

Carthage (4-2, 0-1 CCIW) held a two-point lead early in the first with a three-pointer from AJ Johnson. Following a free throw from Fillip Bulatovic, Tyler Guest hit a bucket from downtown which made it 13-7. The Firebirds held on to a five-point advantage for the next eight minutes until a Wheaton (Ill.) (7-0, 1-0 CCIW) three-pointer put them ahead 26-25. Colton Siegel hit back-to-back threes which put the Firebirds up five with 43 seconds left. The home team headed into the halftime break in front 36-31. 

Wheaton (Ill.) tied the game at 37 to begin the half and later went ahead with a three-pointer. Six lead changes and one tie happened over 13 minutes until four straight points from Anthony Bernero made it a 53-49 score with 6:35 remaining. The Thunder rallied, tying it at 60, and took a two-point advantage with 1:22 left until a Bulatovic dunk on the next possession tied it at 64. After Wheaton (Ill.) made a single free throw, Carthage had two chances to take the victory but fell short 65-64. 

The Firebirds hit the road facing North Central (Ill.) on Saturday, December 7 starting at 7 p.m.

Quick Facts

  • Fillip Bulatovic finished with a double-double on the day finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Bulatovic has had 10 or more rebounds in four of the six games this season. 
  • Colton Sigel came off the bench and added a new season-best 14 points while Anthony Bernero chipped in with 10 points.
  • Tyler Guest grabbed six rebounds and two blocks for Carthage on the day.
