Firebirds Roll Lumberjacks in Season Opener

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's basketball team started the 2021-22 season with an impressive non-conference win over Northland 120-72 on Saturday evening at Tarble Arena.

Carthage (1-0) began the first half with an 11-2 score off a shot from Elijah Blake. After Northland (0-1) took a two-point lead with 13:03 left, Carthage used a 41-12 run to blow the game open as the Firebirds headed into the intermission break up 58-31.

The Firebirds continued the momentum in the second half as a three-pointer from Garrett Horner put Carthage up 30. A dunk from Fillip Bulatovic made it an 84-45 score with 10:46 remaining. Later, a layup from Tyler Guest put the Firebirds up by 46 points as back-to-back layups from Dane Hamilton with under two minutes left gave Carthage the 120-72 victory.

Next up, the Firebirds stay at home playing Defiance on Saturday, November 13 at 3 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Djurickovic

"Great to get back on the floor at Tarble Arena with fans in the stands. It was a nice and enthusiastic crowd for the opener. Our goal today was to pick up the pace and try to be aggressive on the defensive end and it helped lead to our transition offense. Northland is a really well-coached team that competes hard and executes on both ends.

Had some nice performances across the board. Fillip Bulatovic was fantastic on both ends. Elijah Blake got us off to a really good start with 18 points. Have a week to prepare for two games next weekend. Can't wait to get back on the floor!"
