Women’s Volleyball Beats North Park to Advance in the CCIW Tournament

KENOSHA, Wis. — In the semifinals of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament, the No. 2 seed Carthage College women's volleyball team won 3-1 over North Park Thursday night at Tarble Arena.

Playing as the sixth seed in the tournament, North Park (20-11) began the match with a 7-2 lead in the first. Aubree Bucheger got Carthage (20-12) within two with an ace before the Vikings pushed the advantage back to 10-6. Back-to-back kills from Liv Carel and Molly Skoda shrank the margin to one but a Vikings kill put them up two. Two consecutive aces from Skoda tied it at 16 until North Park extended the lead to five. A Megan Dawrant ace and a block from Nicole Acton and Allyson Milligan got the Firebirds with one however, North Park won the first 25-23.

In the second set, the Firebirds started with a 5-1 advantage off a block from Leena Ajibola. Later, a Vikings service error and an ace from Jenna Millen put the home team ahead 15-9. An ace Dawrant made it 23-14 however, the visitors stormed back with an 8-1 run. A final kill from Ajibola gave Carthage the set win 25-22.

Carel added another kill which put the Firebirds up 7-4 to start the third until North Park rallied to tie it at seven. Kaitie Rohe hit a strike that put Carthage up two and later the home team went ahead 16-11 with an ace from Bucheger. North Park responded, cutting the deficit to two before another kill from Ajibola made it 23-20. Though the Vikings got within one, Acton and Rohe got a block to win the set 25-23.

Haley Horner made it 5-3 in the fourth for Carthage to begin. Though North Park took the lead, the Firebirds rallied, going up one with a Vikings bad set 11-10. Later, another rally for the visitors tied it at 19. With the set locked at 23, another block from Ajibola and Horner put Carthage in control while a final kill from Carel won the match 25-21.

The Firebirds will now travel to play the No. 1 seed Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, November 6 at 2 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"North Park is a very talented team, that is a tough sixth seed. I'm proud of the Firebirds, they just kept hanging in there and making plays. Leena Ajibola and Nicole Acton had some great blocks. Haley Horner had a great game. It's a great way for our seniors to end their home career here, the crowd was great, we just love being at home. What a match, it was a dogfight. We had some nerves tonight but in that second set we did a really good job, we got the points when we needed them. I'm just so proud of this team from where we started, to where we are now, this team has grown up so much.

Illinois Wesleyan has a lot of seniors on that team, they played great against us last time. They put a lot of pressure on us and they are well-coached. With them at home, they will have a great crowd behind them. We will give them everything we got and just have to play really well. We just have to execute."
