Firebirds Tournament Run Ends in the CCIW Finals

KENOSHA, Wis. — In the finals of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament, the No. 2 seed Carthage College women's volleyball team fell to No. 1 seed Illinois Wesleyan 3-0 on Saturday at Shirk Center.

Carthage (20-13) started set one with a 5-2 lead to begin with a kill from Haley Horner. After Illinois Wesleyan (19-12) went ahead 13-9, the Firebirds tied it at 13 off a Leena Ajibola kill. The visitors got within one off a block from Ajibola and Molly Skoda but the Titans took the set outscoring Carthage 4-1.

Illinois Wesleyan used the momentum to win the second 25-11 and went ahead 6-3 to begin the third. Another kill from Horner cut the lead to 12-10 but a quick 5-1 run changed the score to 17-11. Later, two attack errors for the home team shrank the margin to 23-21. Though a Liv Carel kill made it a two-point game, the Titans won with a kill of their own 25-22.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"We started the match strong then lost the momentum. We kept closing the gap and when we had the chance to get the lead late we made an error. In the second set, we started slow and their service pressure gave them some runs. In set third, we made a run midway but they powered some balls through our block. We knew we would need to play at a high-level today to beat them. Nonetheless, I want to thank our seniors, Haley Horner, Megan Dawrant, and Nicole Acton for all they have done and meant to the program. I am very proud of the whole team and thank them all for their efforts!"
