Firebirds Take Down Lake Forest With 31-Point Win

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage women's basketball team defended their home court on Tuesday night, picking up an 87-56 victory over Lake Forest at Tarble Arena.

Lauren Knight got the Firebirds (3-2) going with a bang, as she knocked down a three pointer to give the home team a quick lead on their first offensive possession. Layups from Kelsey Coshun and Knight, the latter of which hit a free throw for a three-point play, made it 8-4 in favor of Carthage midway through the quarter. However, the Foresters (2-3) would take the lead 11-10 The two teams traded leads as the quarter wound down, with a three from Ayanna Ester putting Carthage up 19-17 at the buzzer.

After Lake Forest reclaimed the lead minutes into the second period, Knight connected on a pair of free throws to put the home team back on top at 6:31 left in the first half. While the visitors would tie the game at 29 with minutes left before halftime, the Firebirds went on an 8-2 run to take a six-point advantage into the locker room.

With a pair of free throws from Nansy Valev, the Firebirds went out in front by 10 with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. Three pointers from Lauren Herrmann and Addison Ebeling pushed Carthage out in front by 16, before a last-second layup from Marianna Morrissey made it 64-47 headed into the final 10 minute period. 

The home team extended their lead in the fourth quarter, hitting a 20-point lead minutes into the period, before holding on to win by 31.

The Firebirds jump into conference play next, as they host Wheaton College on December 1 at 5 p.m.
