Carthage Falls to No. 1 North Central at Home

KENOSHA, Wis. — In a battle between the top two teams in the CCIW standings, Carthage College fell to No. 1 North Central on Saturday 64-13 at Art Keller Field.

The number one-ranked team in the country, the Cardinals (5-0, 4-0 CCIW) took an early lead on the Firebirds (3-2, 3-1 CCIW), owning a 26-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter. After the visitors scored once more in the second period, the Firebirds got on the board as Noel Wright II found the end zone on a 23-yard run. While Bryce Lowe completed a nice pass to Sam Limbaugh for a 15-yard score, the Cardinals would still lead at the halftime break, 47-13.

North Central added a few more scores in the second half to take sole possession of first place in the conference.

The Firebirds will look to bounce back strong next Saturday at homecoming, as they're set to host North Park on October 16 at 1 p.m. at Art Keller Field.

Head Coach Dustin Hass

"They're a really good football team, you've got to give them credit. Not only are they good, but they played at a high level today. Part of it is that they're a good football team, but when you watch the film, I think you'll see that we made a lot of mistakes on our part. When the kick actually happened, we may have been a bit more jittery than we thought."

"The offense had been playing well and you have to go with the hot hand; they've been playing well that last two weeks. So we gave them the ball to start to see what they could do."

"Every once in a while freshmen hit a bit of a wall, Bryce and the rest of the team made a few mistakes, but I think they'll all bounce back and we'll be fine next week."

Quick Facts

  • Running back Noel Wright II scored the first touchdown of the day for the Firebirds, and has now found the end zone on the ground in four-straight games.
