Firebirds Come Up on Short End of Battle with North Park

KENOSHA, Wis. — In a game where neither team led by double-digits and exchanged scores throughout, the Carthage football team fell short in a tough game with North Park 33-30 on Saturday afternoon at Art Keller Field.

While the Vikings (1-5, 1-4 CCIW) were first to jump on the scoreboard with a field goal on their first drive, the Firebirds (3-3, 3-2 CCIW) responded early in the second quarter. After Noel Wright II helped march the team down the field, Carthage took a 7-3 lead on a pass from Bryce Lowe to Kyle Williamson for six yards. North Park would respond quickly with a long touchdown to go up 9-7, a score that would hold through halftime.

Once more, the visitors struck first on their opening drive of the quarter in the third, but the Firebirds bounced back with a 78-yard touchdown from Lowe to Alex Jarvis, tying the game at 15 after a successful two-point conversion. Lowe and Jarvis would connect once more for six on the following drive, putting the home team on top 22-15. Before the third quarter came to a close, the Vikings added two more touchdowns, taking a 27-22 advantage into the final period.

While Wright scored early in the fourth quarter, North Park responded to take a lead they would hold until the final whistle.

Carthage hits the road next weekend, as they take on Wheaton on Saturday, October 23 at 6 p.m.

Head Coach Dustin Hass

"You have to give North Park credit, they played well, they executed and we did not. The penalties and turnovers hurt us, we can't have the numbers we did in both of those categories today like we did. There may be a pass interference every once in a while that happens, but jumping offsides and giving them free first downs; we just can't do that and expect to win a football game. They played well, they capitalized and deserved to win today."

Running Back Noel Wright II

"Our offensive line was playing well, and I just followed the big guys to see what I could do. They opened up some good holes. This was tough but the game is over, and we just need to focus on the next one."
