Firebirds Grounded by Wheaton on the Road

WHEATON, Ill. — The Carthage football team fell 69-20 to Wheaton (Ill.) on Saturday at McCully Stadium. 

The Thunder (6-1, 5-1 CCIW) got on the board first scoring on the first play from scrimmage to take a 7-0 lead. Following a Firebirds (3-4, 3-3 CCIW) interception, Wheaton (Ill) added a field goal to go up 10-0. After the home team added 21 more points, Bryce Lowe hit Sylvere Campbell on a 10-yard pass making it 31-6. The Carthage defense forced a punt and the offense capitalized as Lowe found Eddie Ell III for a 12-yard touchdown making it 31-13. Wheaton added 21 more points taking a 52-13 score into the intermission break. 

Midway through the fourth, Campbell hauled in his second touchdown of the game as he caught a 41-yard pass from Kyle Jessie, but the Firebirds lost to Wheaton (Ill.) 69-20. 

Carthage returns home facing Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday, October 30 at 1 p.m.

Quick Facts

  • Bryce Lowe threw for 203 yards through the air, marking the fifth time this season he has thrown for 200 yards or more. 
  • Sylvere Campbell led the way in receptions with nine. 
  • Defensively, Chris DiVito led the Firebirds with nine tackles while Jalen Dennis registered an interception on the day, his third of the season.
